Laba Festival Customs
The Laba Festival, which falls on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month each year, is mainly celebrated by drinking Laba porridge. It is one of the major festivals in Buddhism. According to Buddhist records, before Shakyamuni became enlightened, he practiced severe austerities for many years, becoming emaciated. He then discovered that severe austerities were not the ultimate path to liberation and decided to abandon them. At this time, a shepherd girl offered him milk porridge. After eating it, his strength returned, and he sat under the Bodhi tree in meditation, attaining enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth month.
Laba porridge is a type of porridge made with various ingredients on the Laba Festival, also called seven treasures and five flavors porridge. Eating Laba porridge to celebrate the harvest has been passed down to this day. In ancient times, on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, there was a custom among the Chinese people of eating 'Laba porridge' (in some places, it's Laba rice).
After a busy day's work, don't forget to go home and have a bowl of hot porridge.
